Brandon is a relatively large area encompassing 29.3 square miles. It has a population density over 3,600 persons per square mile.
Brandon took off rapidly during the 1980s. Development of the southern area of Brandon brought thousands of new residents. In 1986, I-75 began to bring traffic through the Brandon area, dramatically changing the community and helping its population reach approximately 100,000 with over 2,500 business by 1988.
The Westfield Brandon Mall is a beautiful, modern shopping mall with premium retailers. There are over 180 stores that offer a rich and diverse selection of merchandise. It’s worth the trip just to eat a great lunch at the Food Court. Shopping also abounds along Brandon Boulevard where you can purchase a majority of automobiles in just one small section.
There are plenty of amusement parks, museums, outdoor activities, and major-league professional sports, including baseball (Devil Rays), football (Buccaneers), and hockey (Lightning). Nearby beaches and especially those to the south near Bradenton are attractions for locals and tourists alike. Transportation and air service are excellent. Beachside areas in Clearwater and St. Petersburg are tastefully developed, with palm-tree lined boulevards and pockets of interesting restaurants and shops. These areas tend to be more geared to retirees, especially coastal Clearwater. More family-oriented suburbs and extensive commercial areas like Brandon and Valrico are located east of Tampa.
