Seffner was originally laid out in 1862. Seffner's first post office, school and store were opened in 1884. The town was named after its first postmaster, F.P. Seffner. The early railroad brought prosperity to the community including agriculture. A freeze in the winter of 1874-5 devastated the orange groves and many people left the area seeking work.
The stores and infrastructure in the Seffner-Dover area seam to lag behind those of other areas in eastern Hillsborough County. Although it is growing, the growth is much slower than many areas in eastern Hillsborough County.
Some of the restaurants in the area include the Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, Hungry Harry's Famous BBQ, Waffle House and the Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant.
